Uprising

Picture
Uprising is kind of the story of where we are - a lot of frustration and anger, and things gotta change.

People look at their incomes and compare them to those of Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos or Bill Gates. Or perhaps they see politicians having unlikely amounts of wealth, unless they are stealing it, which they probably are.

I've never heard of a revolution that has done ordinary folks much good, but, if you are into money, you probably really are being done down as the bills come in.

I'll just write music. Musicians rarely have any money but we do have our music.

01 escondida

This is a tune about lost love, or missed love, or unrequited love. Sweet memories. Bitter-sweet memories. And often for the best.

02 last chance chorale

Not exactly a chorale as there is no choir, but it kinda sounds like one. We are given lots of warnings when events around us are falling out of kilter, and then Wham! Different world.

03 wanna be a rich girl

It's fairly new that women earn large fortunes and power in their own right, and they then come up  against the same things as all rich men have faced throughout the ages - people want their money.

The music world has almost split by sex. Women dominate Pop, while men dominate Hip Hop. The old, male rock world has virtually disappeared.

This song is really a be careful what you wish for and is not unaware of what happened to Britney Spears.

04 Storm Clouds

Uprisings have storm clouds. 'Nuff said.

05 Hard drinking man

When things get difficult, there is the tendency to duck for cover with the help of a substance or two. There again, writers, including song-writers, really can't do it without the help of a substance or two. As Freud said, the same stimulus can lead to two opposite outcomes - in this case self-destruction or creativity, although it can be both. And Freud knew a thing or two about cocaine.

06 More of the story

As I wrote the song, I just felt that there was a story to tell but I didn't know what it was. I still don't.

07 pirate

This song is for Jean-Claude Lair, a truly wonderful guy who was a fur smuggler in Russia and later a restaurateur and hotelier in San Francisco. If you have ever eaten at the Maison de la Presse or the Ste. Jeanne on Bush, or stayed at the Cable Car Hotel on California, those were his once. He was a truly determinedly liberal guy, who dressed in bright nylon shorts and a Breitling watch. Sadly, he died in 2021, but we remember him with deep affection.
