take 10
‘Take 10’ is a compilation of some of my favorite tracks up until the ‘Vegas, Vegas’ album.
The good news is that if you have bought, or borrowed, or otherwise found all of my first seven albums, you won’t need this one …

01 the killing outside our window at 5am (from 'vegas, vegas')
Some of the time we live face on to the desert in New Mexico, and in the early morning hours you hear shrieks and calls, which we assume is the sound of roadrunners chasing down jack rabbits.

02 in my dreams (from 'Passageway')

03 the glide (from 'Ice cream')
This was written after helping set up a fundraiser for Glide Memorial in San Francisco which serves thousands of free meals a day to anybody who wants them. I also often volunteer there when I am in town. Warren Buffett usually auctions his time for an intimate meal for several million dollars in aid of this fundraiser.

04 sister (from 'the sympathy thief')
I’ve got two sisters, both of them wonderful. But they don’t like it if I write to them together, so it has to be one at a time.

05 snowbitch (from 'the sympathy thief')
I need to work on the lyrics for this one. This one definitely deserves lyrics.

06 no shit! (from 'the sympathy thief')
I’m not going to explain the exact details of this one, but it is based on being saved from a life-threatening situation.
07 takeaway (from 'let's go home')
For the people who feel they are left behind in the techno-rush and globalization of the modern world. Not everybody can be a whiz kid.

08 golden virginia (from 'heartbreakers to the right, heartbroken to the left')
This is a rare go-for-it rocker from me, as I generally prefer more mid-tempo, ballady-type pieces. It is about a stalker who has spent some hours of fun and frolic with a rock star (although, predictably, he denies it), and believes that gives her a claim on him.

09 dust on my shoes (from 'the great american road trip')
The story of a man who has spent all his life since his teens on the road, living in many different places across America off short-term jobs.
The pluses for him have been getting to know his country as few others have, constant changes of scenery, avoiding all the squabbles of people who have lived together for far too long, and the pleasure of casual acquaintance with strangers.
But he also feels he has missed out on some aspects of a settled life, such as the support and companionship of friends and family, as he approaches his later years.

10 goodbye, anna-marie (from 'heartbreakers to the right, heartbroken to the left')
Here our confused hero logically recognizes that a previous relationship was disastrous from the get-go, but still has feelings for his Ex and is tempted to try again.
I would scream, “Don’t do it!” at him (or her), but this is a song with characters who will do whatever dumb thing comes to their minds, including re-entering a relationship that has already proved to be a monumental car crash of an affair. (Seat belts will cost you extra).
