‘Ice Cream’ should really have been called ‘Sorbet’ as it was designed as a palate cleanser, using up all the ideas I had not used so far. Therefore, when I think of this album I normally also think, ‘Hmmm!’ Except that, when I listen to it, I actually really quite like it, especially the first two tracks.
01 not buying '99
This started as ‘Not buying 69,’ but as it was the opening track, the ‘69’ was changed to ‘99’ because, in Britain, a ‘99’ is a vanilla ice cream in a cone with a Cadbury’s Flake thrust into it. Hang onto that visual.
02 the glide
This was written after helping set up a fundraiser for Glide Memorial in San Francisco which serves thousands of free meals a day to anybody who wants them. I also often volunteer there when I am in town. Warren Buffett usually auctions his time for an intimate meal for several million dollars in aid of this fundraiser.

There was this lovely lady in our apartment block in San Francisco who died one morning. This one is for her. There was another lovely person called Chuck who died there at the age of twenty-seven. In fact, people regularly died there, and when they didn’t, the police were regularly raiding the place anyway. We like places where there is a lot going on.

I am rather fond of rats but thought I was pretty well on my own in this one until a couple cafés in San Francisco started up offering their clientèle coffee in a deliberately rat-infested atmosphere. I suppose I should be giving them more custom than I have so far but I can’t find anyone to come with me.
